How Puzzle Academy works
Learn skills through a structured curriculum
In Puzzle Academy, chess ideas are organized into skills. You learn tactics, combinations, checkmate patterns, how to attack and defend, and important endgame techniques in a structured way.
Unlock new levels step by step
Each skill is broken into levels with increasing difficulty and calculation depth. As you progress through the curriculum and master earlier skills, new levels become available through the skill tree.
Progress through Academy ranks
Ranks help you start at the right level, see how far you have come, and know what to work on next. Your dashboard shows your progress toward the next rank, making your training clearer and more motivating.
Train with personalized workouts
Once you unlock enough skills, Puzzle Academy creates workouts from the skills you have already learned, without revealing the motif in advance. This is where you move from knowing a pattern to recognizing it for yourself.
Learn from guides and examples
Many skills also include guides and annotated examples, so you do not just solve puzzles — you learn the underlying idea, the typical patterns, and how they appear in practical positions.
Why Puzzle Academy feels different
Many players already solve lots of puzzles. That can be useful, but it often lacks structure: you solve one position after another without a clear path, without knowing which skills you are strengthening, and without much help on what to study next.
Puzzle Academy takes a different approach. It organizes training by skills, motifs, and difficulty, then adapts your workouts to your strengths and weaknesses. Instead of just solving more puzzles, you build pattern recognition step by step and train the ideas that matter most for your own improvement.
Unstructured puzzle solving
- One puzzle after another
- Often little structure by theme
- Hard to know what to study next
- Less focus on specific weak spots
Puzzle Academy
- Organized by skills and difficulty
- Clear progression through the curriculum
- Personalized workouts
- Guidance on what to work on next
That structure turns simple puzzle solving into focused chess training.
From learning the motif to recognizing it yourself
When you learn a new skill, you know the theme of the puzzle. That guidance helps you learn the idea clearly — but in your own games, nobody tells you that there is a fork, a defensive resource, or a checkmate idea waiting to be found.
That is why personalized workouts are such an important part of Puzzle Academy. They use the skills you have already unlocked, but without revealing the motif in advance. This helps you move from learning a pattern to recognizing it for yourself.
Over time, the goal is better transfer to your own games: spotting tactics more reliably, recognizing patterns faster, calculating more accurately, and making better decisions over the board.
Know what to work on next
Puzzle Academy includes ranks from Beginner to Expert, making it easier to start at the right rank and follow a clear path through the curriculum.
Your dashboard shows your current rank and your progress toward the next one. To advance, you master important skills from your current rank and unlock the next skills needed for further growth.
Instead of facing a large collection of puzzles without direction, you always have a clear next step.
A comprehensive curriculum for practical chess improvement
Puzzle Academy is a structured curriculum covering the most important patterns and ideas in chess, from tactical foundations to advanced combinations, checkmate patterns, defence, attacking play, and endgames.
It includes 8 courses, 172 skills, and 460 structured levels, backed by more than 200,000 puzzles. That scale matters because each idea can be trained through many different positions — while the curriculum still gives you a clear path through the material.
taktikk
Spot the tactic when it matters
You may already know what a knight fork is. But do you spot it quickly when the chance appears in a real game?
In the Tactics course, you train the most important material-winning ideas across many different positions and levels. You do not just learn the motif name. You learn to recognize when it is there.
White has just played the blunder Ng1-e2?, and Black can strike immediately with the knight fork 1...Ne5, attacking the queen on f3 and the unprotected bishop on c4. Because White's own knight on e2 blocks the queen's retreat, both pieces cannot be saved.
Forsvar
See the danger before it is too late
Good chess is not only about creating threats. It is also about seeing your opponent's ideas in time — and avoiding moves that allow tactics against you.
The Defence course trains exactly that skill. You learn to identify threats, defend against tactical ideas, and find resources that save difficult positions.
Black is up material, but White escapes with a surprising stalemate: 1.Rxh5+! Qxh5 2.Qg7+! Kxg7. Training defence helps you stay alert to hidden possibilities in difficult positions.
Mattkombinasjoner
Calculate the finish when it matters most
Some of the most satisfying moments in chess come when one forcing move creates a decisive finish.
The Checkmate Combinations course trains exactly this kind of thinking. You learn to combine tactical motifs with checkmate ideas: decoys, deflections, quiet moves, line-opening sacrifices, and more.
In the final game of the World Championship tiebreak, Magnus Carlsen found 1.Qh6+!!. After 1...gxh6, White has 2.Rxf7#. After 1...Kxh6, White has 2.Rh8#. One move, two mating ideas, no defence.
