Examples
Black has just played Bd4+. How do you defend?
1.Re3? or 1.Qf2? would lose material. 1.Kh1? would allow back-rank mate with 1...Rf1#.
1.Be3 is the only good move.
Black has just played Qf6+.
There are only two legal moves: Kh5 and Kg4.
1.Kg4? would allow dovetail mate with 1...Qf5#.
1.Kh5 is the only good defence.
