Accessibility Statement
ChessPuzzle.net is designed to be usable with a keyboard and with screen readers, including the main chess board and puzzle interaction.
Accessibility status
The website is designed to conform to WCAG 2.1 Level AA.
The main puzzle features, including the chess board, puzzle solving, move input, and screen reader announcements, support keyboard and screen reader use.
Using the chess board with the keyboard
You can use the chess board without a mouse.
When the chess board has focus:
- Use the arrow keys to move the board cursor from square to square.
- Use the file keys a to h and rank keys 1 to 8 to move directly to a square.
- Press Enter or Space to select a piece or square.
To make a move, first select the piece, then select the target square.
For example, to play e2-e4, move to e2, press Enter or Space, then move to e4 and press Enter or Space again.
You can also enter moves by square, for example:
e2, Enter, e4, Enter
Using the chess board with a screen reader
The board announces the current square and piece, for example:
"e4, white pawn"
When you select a piece, the board announces the selection, for example:
"selected white knight f3"
When you move to a legal target square, the board announces what the move would do, for example:
"to e5"
"takes queen e5"
During puzzle play, the site also announces both your moves and the opponent's replies.
The board also provides a text description of the current position, so you can review the position without relying on the visual board.
Known limitations and feedback
Keyboard and screen reader support for the chess board and puzzle interaction is a new feature. Chess board accessibility is a complex area, and there may still be bugs or ways to make the experience better.
If you find an accessibility problem, or if you have a suggestion for improving keyboard or screen reader support, please use the Contact page.
Feedback from players who use assistive technologies is especially helpful.
Enforcement
If you are not satisfied with our response, you can contact the Bundesfachstelle Barrierefreiheit, the central coordination body for digital accessibility in Germany, which can advise you on the enforcement procedure under the Barrierefreiheitsstärkungsgesetz (BFSG).
