In this level, your opponent is attacking one or more of your pieces. Your only defence is to give a check.

Examples

White's last move Kc4 is a king fork, attacking your rook and bishop.
c6 or Re5 do not help, because of Nxc5 (or Nf6+).
Black's only defence is the counter rook fork with Rd4+.
After Kxc5, Black regains the material with Rxe4.

White has pinned your queen against your king.
The only defence is Rf1+!
After Qxf1, the queen is deflected away from protecting the rook, and Black can regain the material with Qxd2.
