Defend your piece and avoid a fork

Examples

White just played Nd4, attacking the rook on c2.
The rook has two safe squares on c4 and c5.
If the rook goes to c5, White can win an exchange with the fork Ne6.
Rc4 is the only good defence.

Black just played Nb4, attacking the queen on c6, and also threatening a fork with Nc2+.
The queen has two safe squares on f3 and a4.
Qa4 is the only good defence, because it protects against the fork.

Visualization

In these avoid levels, you have to spot any threats of your opponent before your move, and also after your move. This is good practice so you don't fall in the traps set by your opponent.

If you don't spot the threat, or the line to be avoided, you can always check the solution page, which shows both.
